A lot has been said about the proposed stadium at Underhill. Below are some of these things, followed by the FACTS. If you are going to the meeting on Friday then print this out so that you have the facts to hand.

The following myths were on the leaflet that was posted to nearby residents. The facts are from the Official Website.

Myth

The proposed stadium will have a capacity of 10,000

Fact

The actual figure is 9212.

Myth

The stadium will be rebuilt on 15 acres of Green Belt land

Fact

The correct figure is seven acres

Myth

There will be twenty concession shop units

Fact

These are catering units inside the stadium for the sale of food and beverages to supporters.

Myth

Some of the present stands at Underhill will be refurbished or rebuilt

Fact

There will be NO rebuilding or refurbishment. In fact, all stands and terraces will be removed, other than the main stand which will stay to accommodate changing facilities and family spectators.

Myth

The stands will be 40 feet high (about four storeys)

Fact

What is not made clear is that this is on one side because of the slope across the site and the overall height of the stadium is consistent with that of the existing housing adjacent to the stadium at approximately 26 feet, about two storeys.

Myth

There will be a Function Suite at the club.

Fact

This one is true! There is also a Funtion Suite at the present Underhill Ground! It is named after the late Kevin Durham who played for Barnet in the 1990/91 season who tragically died shortly after helping Barnet win promotion.

Other Myths

The next set of Myths are those that have been peddled in letters to the local press. The facts still originate from the official site.

Myth

The land is currently public.

Fact

The area in question is currently private land (leased to Barnet Cricket Club), not public, and in the new proposal there would be half an acre more of public amenity space than at present.

Myth

Residents will have to pay to park outside their own homes in a controlled parking zone (CPZ) over a two km area around the stadium.

Fact

Barnet Council are constantly reviewing their parking policies, and this is under consideration. Parking for residents will be free. The initial zone would be in the immediate vicinity of the ground, replacing the current informal parking arrangements, and the area of CPZ will only increase after consultation with residents upon the club achieving a significant average increase in attendance.

In fact the plans include parking for staff, officials and sponsors. At present this is almost non-existent. There have been letters in the press complaining that at present players, etc park in the street (not that there's a law against this). This will no longer be a problem.

Myth

Barnet Cricket Club will be made homeless.

Fact

The club has repeatedly stated that this development will not go ahead until Barnet Cricket Club are relocated.

Myth

The Souts and St John's Ambulance Unit will be made homeless.

Fact

The club has repeatedly stated that this development will not go ahead until these groups are relocated. The club will want to use the area underneath the stands to re-house the Scouts and St John Ambulance.

Myth

The stadium will be used for parties, concerts etc.

Fact

The club already have parties within the existing stadium and understand that the current Scouts and the St John premises are made available for this use also. As far as concerts are concerned, there is nothing to prevent the club doing this now but there has never been one.
